Integrative Medicine Helps Patient One Day at a Time

Emma Powers, Music Therapist • September 14, 2026

I recently had the opportunity to work with a patient who was struggling with depression and grief as his illness progressed. As he lost abilities and became more homebound, the hospice team knew he could benefit from additional emotional support. However, he had repeatedly declined visits from the chaplain and social worker.

I joined the patient's nurse for a visit and began building rapport with both him and his daughter. After that initial meeting, he agreed to let me return for music therapy visits. Over time, we developed a wonderful relationship, and he and his family shared how much they valued our sessions together.

One of his favorite songs was One Day at a Time, Sweet Jesus. During our early visits, I would often sing the song and gently remind him, "Remember, just take things one day at a time." Before long, he started saying it himself. When he noticed his thoughts beginning to spiral, he would grin and say, "I know, one day at a time!" His daughter even remarked, "That saying has become his mantra."

Shortly before his birthday, I partnered with our art therapist to create a special gift for him. Together, we designed a small piece of artwork on cards featuring the phrase "One Day at a Time,” with musical notes painted on the pieces. He was deeply touched by the gift and placed the cards throughout his home as daily reminders of hope and perseverance.

After he died, his daughter had one final request. She asked if I would record One Day at a Time, Sweet Jesus so it could be played at his funeral. I was honored to do so, and she later shared that it became a meaningful part of his celebration of life.

This experience reminds me of the many ways our Integrative Medicine team works together to support patients and families. Whether through music, art, or other therapies, we help meet emotional and spiritual needs while creating meaningful connections that often continue long after a patient's journey has ended.

Over the years, I've seen how massage therapy can help ease physical discomfort, anxiety, and stress for hospice patients. But one of its most meaningful benefits is something less visible: helping patients feel less alone.

A patient living with Parkinson's disease and advanced prostate cancer was recently referred to our Integrative Medicine team. While his wife was a strong supporter of hospice care, she wasn't aware that Bluegrass Care Navigators also offers integrative medicine therapies such as massage, that complement the medical care for the nursing team.

After a loss, many people ask the universal question: “How long will my grief last?” This is especially true for a first loss. Some people ask for ways to hurry through the grieving process, but there is no shortcut. It is difficult to accept that one has little control, but with grief work, the sense of loss can slowly improve.
