President Carter Reaches Six Months in Hospice. Hospice Care Leaders Salute his Contributions.

Nearly six months ago, President Carter and his family chose hospice care for his end-of-life journey. By sharing that choice publicly, the Carters have sparked a national conversation and countless private ones about end-of-life care choices.

To commemorate President Carter’s milestone of six months on hospice, the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) invited an intimate group of members to gather in New York City to thank him for lighting a way for all of us. Brief remarks were given in front of the Nasdaq screen by hospice and community leaders coming together in one of America’s most well-known public squares to express gratitude for President Carter’s leadership and the courageous conversations he has inspired.

President and CEO of Bluegrass Care Navigators Liz Fowler attended the event. An active member of NHPCO, Bluegrass Care Navigators serves patients in 32 counties across Kentucky, providing personalized end-of-life care to bring moments of joy and peace and patients and families.

Speakers included: Ben Marcantonio, Interim CEO of NHPCO, Susan Lloyd, CEO of Delaware Hospice, Jacqueline Lopez-Devine, Chief Clinical Officer (CCO) of Gentiva.

Married for more than 63 years, the couple met as teenagers, built a family through adoption, and spent decades serving others together. Their moments together became even more precious after Lois received a serious diagnosis two years ago. After undergoing surgery, the cancer recurred, and the couple chose to forgo additional treatment and live the best quality of life possible with support from Bluegrass Care Navigators (BCN).

Person-Centered Care Makes a Difference for the Hoffstedder Family

Team BCN brought compassionate, personalized care to Tim and Helen Hoffstedder during a challenging chapter in their lives. After receiving a dementia diagnosis almost seven years ago, Helen’s family did their best to care for her at home. When she required additional support, they moved her to ColdSpring Transitional Care where she could receive high-quality care around the clock. In February 2024, she began retaining fluid and had difficulty breathing. The team at ColdSpring Care referred the family to Bluegrass Hospice Care and that extra support brought her husband Tim immense reassurance.
