Art Therapy Helps Dementia Patient Combat Anxiety and Depression

December 21, 2023

In the final chapters of her life, an elderly patient named Margaret embarked on an unexpected and heartwarming journey as part of her care with Bluegrass Care Navigators (BCN).

Margaret's days were increasingly marked by confusion as she grappled with the cruel reality of dementia. Her cherished memories slipped away, yet she clung to pens and markers, which became her steadfast companions.

In their first art therapy session, Margaret and the art therapist from BCN’s Integrative Medicine Team explored different art media. Margaret's preferences were clear: she loved vibrant, intense colors. Her sketchbooks soon filled with radiant pots of flowers, each stroke a testament to her determination to cope with her ever-present anxiety and depression.

Margaret's family played an essential role in her transformation. They framed and displayed her artwork on the walls of her room, turning the sterile environment into a colorful oasis. As weeks passed, Margaret's mental state deteriorated. But even at the end, Margaret requested her markers and sketchbook. She created fluid forms in bright colors, reminiscent of people dancing, an activity she had once cherished. Margaret, now mostly silent, remained focused on her creations through the end of her life.

BCN created its Integrative Medicine program in 2019 with a clear goal: to enhance and support excellent palliative and end-of-life care for our patients and families by complementing and coordinating conventional medicine and treatments with non-traditional practices. This allows for a fuller, holistic, patient-centered approach to health and wellness, including mental, emotional and physical functioning, plus spiritual, social and community aspects.

Art therapy is part of the integrative medicine program at Bluegrass Care Navigators and is generously supported by donors. Margaret is one of many patients who have felt isolated and found hope because of these therapies. The impact of art therapy extends far beyond the confines of a canvas; it touches the hearts and souls of individuals, who have discovered newfound strength and resilience through the process of creation.

Our Integrative Medicine program is entirely funded through private support, including grants and philanthropic donations. No BCN patient is ever turned away from receiving Integrative Medicine therapies due to their insurance status, and there is no charge to the patient for these services. Without the dedication and care made possible through the generosity of donors like you, patients like Margaret would not have enjoyed the same quality of life or dignity in navigating their end-of-life journey.

Bluegrass Care Navigators has partnered with God’s Pantry to provide food boxes to patients experiencing food insecurity across its service lines. In the first month alone, team members and volunteers delivered 50 boxes to medically frail older adults. By addressing barriers like transportation, mobility, and limited income, this collaboration extends patient care beyond clinical needs to better support overall health and quality of life.

Marla Sowers was never defined by titles though she held many. A pianist and Miss Morehead State University, a valedictorian, a beautiful singer, and an excellent writer, she carried the practical wisdom of her farming family into everything she did. As a public school elementary music teacher, Marla shaped hearts by inviting students to see kindness as strength. When a dementia diagnosis altered the rhythm of her days, her husband Richard cared for her at home and then with the help of an assisted living facility for as long as he could. After several years, the facility referred her to Bluegrass Care Navigators (BCN) for hospice services.
