BCN Volunteer Honors Chaplains with Handcrafted Stoles

February 5, 2025

For almost 20 years, Paige Prewitt has embodied the spirit of selfless giving as a volunteer with Bluegrass Care Navigators. From therapy dog visits with Lilly to sewing masks during the pandemic, Paige has consistently found ways to meet others’ needs and give back to her community. Recently, she volunteered her time to handcraft 28 stoles to honor and celebrate our chaplains at Bluegrass Care Navigators.

“This project was a unique opportunity to combine creativity with making a meaningful impact,” Paige shared. “Often, I never know how my sewing projects resonate with others, but this time was especially rewarding. I got to see firsthand how it uplifted our chaplains, who tirelessly support our patients and their families.”

As part of the annual chaplain education day, Chaplain Team Lead John Culbertson built in additional time for spiritual renewal and connection. Recognizing the physical, emotional and spiritual challenges that embody the work his team does daily, he wanted to offer the chaplains a meaningful gift that was practical and symbolized the sacred role they hold for their patients and community. That’s when Paige stepped in.

Paige spent about 100 hours sewing and donated the materials to handcraft these stoles in BCN colors. At the retreat, each chaplain received an affirmation and blessing as the stole was placed on their shoulders by a colleague.

"Receiving this stole is deeply meaningful," said Chaplain Dawn Montgomery. "To each of us, it’s more than just fabric—it’s a tangible validation of the sacred work we are called to do. It reminds us that we are seen and supported, and it carries a sense of love and care that we can pass along to the patients and families we serve."

For Paige, this project was another way to say “yes” to helping others, inspired by her own experiences with hospice and a lifetime of service.

“I want people to be as comfortable as they can be and to feel like they’re part of something bigger,” she shared.

The stoles now serve as both a blessing and a reminder of the enduring impact of one volunteer’s extraordinary gift. Paige’s work exemplifies the power of compassion and creativity in lifting spirits and strengthening community.

“When chaplains wear these stoles, I hope they’re reminded they’re exactly where they need to be,” John said. “It’s a symbol of their ministry and of the gratitude we have for them.”

Hi. I'm Callie. Most days, my job is simple: walk into rooms with my human, Mary, wag my tail, and let people know they’re not alone. I’ve been doing this therapy dog work with her for a while now, and I take it very seriously, even if I’m small and fluffy.

Bluegrass Care Navigators provides care in person and via phone
By Lisa Lewis, Support Center RN February 17, 2026
As a Support Center RN, I’ve witnessed many moments of compassion, but few have touched me as deeply as the call I received from a patient’s wife in our Pikeville region. She shared how our nurse, Tiffany Little (RN), provided care with such warmth and dedication that her presence brought genuine comfort and support to their lives.
Tim and Helen Hoffstedder

Team BCN brought compassionate, personalized care to Tim and Helen Hoffstedder during a challenging chapter in their lives. After receiving a dementia diagnosis almost seven years ago, Helen’s family did their best to care for her at home. When she required additional support, they moved her to ColdSpring Transitional Care where she could receive high-quality care around the clock. In February 2024, she began retaining fluid and had difficulty breathing. The team at ColdSpring Care referred the family to Bluegrass Hospice Care and that extra support brought her husband Tim immense reassurance.
