The nonprofit’s slate of officers for 2025 includes: Mark Day of HDR Inc., Chair; Jennifer Madden, retired attorney, Vice Chair; Bo Cofield of Northern Arizona Healthcare, Treasurer; and Jennifer Taylor, Senior Managing Consultant, FORVIS, Secretary.

BCN also welcomed four new members to its governing board for 2025. Bill Wilson, Rachael Chamberlain, Shirie Hawkins and Robert Edwards began their three-year appointments this month.

“These distinguished professionals join a team of individuals dedicated to enhancing our commitment to providing exceptional, end-of-life care,” Liz Fowler, President & CEO, said. “Driven by their passion for service and unique expertise, this group brings invaluable perspectives that will lead us into the future and enable us to continue to provide innovative, compassionate care to all Kentuckians.”

Rachael Chamberlain, partner at Frost Brown Todd, practices in the area of tax law with an emphasis on state, local and nonprofit taxation. She has assisted numerous nonprofits with the formation of new entities, providing guidance on various issues, such as internal governance, ongoing reporting, excise taxes and exemptions. She also currently serves as the Chair of the Taxation Section of the Kentucky Bar Association.

Rob Edwards serves as vice president and chief strategy and growth officer for UK HealthCare. Previously, he served in various positions appointed by Kentucky’s Governor in the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, including chief of staff, budget director and legislative director.

Shirie Hawkins, president of Everything Equity is part of the management team at Community Ventures that assists small businesses that were unable to access funding through conventional banks to achieve their goals. In this role, she seeks to improve the quality of life for Kentuckians. Whether her clients need access to education or financial resources, Shirie empowers these individuals to succeed, improve their quality of life and grow their economic impact. Prior to serving in this role, she served as a commercial lender at Community Trust Bank.

Bill Wilson, retired vice president for development and major gifts at Kentucky State University, enjoyed a diverse career in many sectors, including as a history teacher, public television executive, and executive director of the Thomas Hunt Morgan Institute of Genetics, where he focused on genetic counseling and educational programs on sickle cell disease. After a stint with Cambridge Publishing Company in New York and Esquire Magazine, he returned to Kentucky and KET to become the deputy executive director of education outreach. This led to a KET-produced distance learning program for 3,000 students from all over the U.S. and was the first program of this kind to exist. March 24, 2026
Marla Sowers was never defined by titles though she held many. A pianist and Miss Morehead State University, a valedictorian, a beautiful singer, and an excellent writer, she carried the practical wisdom of her farming family into everything she did. As a public school elementary music teacher, Marla shaped hearts by inviting students to see kindness as strength. When a dementia diagnosis altered the rhythm of her days, her husband Richard cared for her at home and then with the help of an assisted living facility for as long as he could. After several years, the facility referred her to Bluegrass Care Navigators (BCN) for hospice services.

Callie, one of our volunteer therapy dogs
By By Callie, Volunteer Therapy Dog (and very good girl) March 2, 2026
Hi. I'm Callie. Most days, my job is simple: walk into rooms with my human, Mary, wag my tail, and let people know they’re not alone. I’ve been doing this therapy dog work with her for a while now, and I take it very seriously, even if I’m small and fluffy.

Their moments together became even more precious after Lois received a serious diagnosis two years ago. After undergoing surgery, the cancer recurred, and the couple chose to forgo additional treatment and live the best quality of life possible with support from Bluegrass Care Navigators (BCN).

Bluegrass Care Navigators provides care in person and via phone
By Lisa Lewis, Support Center RN February 17, 2026
As a Support Center RN, I’ve witnessed many moments of compassion, but few have touched me as deeply as the call I received from a patient’s wife in our Pikeville region. She shared how our nurse, Tiffany Little (RN), provided care with such warmth and dedication that her presence brought genuine comfort and support to their lives.
Tim and Helen Hoffstedder
February 17, 2026
Team BCN brought compassionate, personalized care to Tim and Helen Hoffstedder during a challenging chapter in their lives. After receiving a dementia diagnosis almost seven years ago, Helen’s family did their best to care for her at home. When she required additional support, they moved her to ColdSpring Transitional Care where she could receive high-quality care around the clock. In February 2024, she began retaining fluid and had difficulty breathing. The team at ColdSpring Care referred the family to Bluegrass Hospice Care and that extra support brought her husband Tim immense reassurance.
