Bluegrass Care Navigators Provides Family with More Moments

March 24, 2026

When Bill Papania thinks about Bluegrass Care Navigators, he doesn’t just remember the end of his mother’s life, he remembers the time, comfort, and connection Team BCN made possible.

Bill Papania's Mother

In the fall of 2004, Bill’s mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. By the following spring, her health declined rapidly after an infection sent her to the hospital. When she was discharged, her care team believed she had only weeks to live. Thanks to the expert, compassionate care provided by Bluegrass Care Navigators, she lived more than five additional months, time that meant everything to her family.

“We couldn’t have had our mother at home and comfortable without Bluegrass Care Navigators,” Bill said. “We all knew she was dying, but their care gave us comfort and, most importantly, more moments together.”

BCN’s care team showed up whenever they were needed. Nurses visited often to manage wound care and symptoms, allowing Bill and his family to focus on what mattered most, simply being together.

One of Bill’s favorite memories is a small but meaningful ritual.

“Mom enjoyed a cocktail occasionally,” he said. “Sometimes, my brother and I would stop by after work and have happy hour with her. I’ll always remember that and those conversations. If she hadn’t been at home, those moments wouldn’t have happened.”

After his mother’s death, Bill knew he wanted to give back to help ensure other families could experience the same compassionate care. He first became a donor, and later, a volunteer. For more than a year, Bill has given his time to BCN, including delivering holiday stockings to patients.

One visit in particular stayed with him. Bill was welcomed into the home of a husband caring for his wife, who had been diagnosed with dementia. It was clear the weight of caregiving was heavy. As the two talked, they discovered a shared love of fishing and spent nearly an hour swapping stories.

“I knew this man was in a tough spot,” Bill said. “It just felt good to be able to do something that made his day and his journey a little better. That’s what volunteering is all about.”

Stories like Bill’s are possible because of generous donors, dedicated volunteers, and the compassionate professionals of Team BCN. Together, they create comfort, connection, and moments that families will carry with them forever. To learn more about our services call 855.492.0812 or visit bgcarenav.org.

Marla Sowers was never defined by titles though she held many. A pianist and Miss Morehead State University, a valedictorian, a beautiful singer, and an excellent writer, she carried the practical wisdom of her farming family into everything she did. As a public school elementary music teacher, Marla shaped hearts by inviting students to see kindness as strength. When a dementia diagnosis altered the rhythm of her days, her husband Richard cared for her at home and then with the help of an assisted living facility for as long as he could. After several years, the facility referred her to Bluegrass Care Navigators (BCN) for hospice services.

Hi. I'm Callie. Most days, my job is simple: walk into rooms with my human, Mary, wag my tail, and let people know they’re not alone. I’ve been doing this therapy dog work with her for a while now, and I take it very seriously, even if I’m small and fluffy.

As a Support Center RN, I’ve witnessed many moments of compassion, but few have touched me as deeply as the call I received from a patient’s wife in our Pikeville region. She shared how our nurse, Tiffany Little (RN), provided care with such warmth and dedication that her presence brought genuine comfort and support to their lives.
Tim and Helen Hoffstedder

Team BCN brought compassionate, personalized care to Tim and Helen Hoffstedder during a challenging chapter in their lives. After receiving a dementia diagnosis almost seven years ago, Helen’s family did their best to care for her at home. When she required additional support, they moved her to ColdSpring Transitional Care where she could receive high-quality care around the clock. In February 2024, she began retaining fluid and had difficulty breathing. The team at ColdSpring Care referred the family to Bluegrass Hospice Care and that extra support brought her husband Tim immense reassurance.
