Bluegrass Care Navigators Remembers its Community in Different Ways

May 17, 2024

In the fast-paced world of healthcare, it’s easy to lose sight of the human stories that unfold within our walls. However, at BCN, we recognize the importance of remembering those we have loved and lost. It’s woven into the very fabric of our team and the care that we provide. Through a variety of intentional moments, we honor the memory of our patients and those in our community, ensuring their legacy continues.

“As active participants in the stories of resilience, love, and grace that unfold each day, every patient and family we serve leaves an indelible mark on all of us,” Liz Fowler, President and CEO of BCN, said. “As a result, we are inspired to continue providing even more compassionate, family-centered care.”

During our monthly staff meetings, care teams at BCN remember each patient with writings, ribbons, glass beads and other meaningful rituals. Through these moments, we pay homage to the profound connections forged within our community and reaffirm our commitment to honor each individual journey.

One of the most poignant symbols of remembrance at BCN is our memorial garden. This serene space designed by Jon Carloftis serves as a tranquil sanctuary where loved ones can reflect and pay tribute to those who have passed away. With carefully tended flowers, tree sculptures designed by Maynard Studios, and tranquil seating areas, it offers solace and comfort to grieving hearts.

BCN’s "1,000 Touches Memorial" serves as a tribute to those we have loved and lost during the pandemic. Each hand and thumbprint symbolize the power of connection amidst isolation. Together, we honor, celebrate, and cherish those we've lost and those we serve at each of our seven locations.

As BCN remembers each patient and family served, we also honor our community in unique ways. Each spring, irises bloom in memory of those lost on the Comair Flight 5191 crash at Bluegrass Airport on August 27, 2006. Their vibrant hues remind us of cherished memories and the enduring spirit of our community.

Join us in honoring the lives of individuals we have loved and lost, whether in hospice care or in other ways. Donate at bgcarenav.org/donate and share the name of your loved one with us. We will remember with you at a special ceremony. If you’d like a more permanent way to remember your loved one, reach out to our Philanthropy Department at give@bgcarenav.org to learn about the options we have available.

Marla Sowers was never defined by titles though she held many. A pianist and Miss Morehead State University, a valedictorian, a beautiful singer, and an excellent writer, she carried the practical wisdom of her farming family into everything she did. As a public school elementary music teacher, Marla shaped hearts by inviting students to see kindness as strength. When a dementia diagnosis altered the rhythm of her days, her husband Richard cared for her at home and then with the help of an assisted living facility for as long as he could. After several years, the facility referred her to Bluegrass Care Navigators (BCN) for hospice services.

Hi. I'm Callie. Most days, my job is simple: walk into rooms with my human, Mary, wag my tail, and let people know they’re not alone. I’ve been doing this therapy dog work with her for a while now, and I take it very seriously, even if I’m small and fluffy.

Bluegrass Care Navigators provides care in person and via phone
By Lisa Lewis, Support Center RN February 17, 2026
As a Support Center RN, I’ve witnessed many moments of compassion, but few have touched me as deeply as the call I received from a patient’s wife in our Pikeville region. She shared how our nurse, Tiffany Little (RN), provided care with such warmth and dedication that her presence brought genuine comfort and support to their lives.
Tim and Helen Hoffstedder

Team BCN brought compassionate, personalized care to Tim and Helen Hoffstedder during a challenging chapter in their lives. After receiving a dementia diagnosis almost seven years ago, Helen’s family did their best to care for her at home. When she required additional support, they moved her to ColdSpring Transitional Care where she could receive high-quality care around the clock. In February 2024, she began retaining fluid and had difficulty breathing. The team at ColdSpring Care referred the family to Bluegrass Hospice Care and that extra support brought her husband Tim immense reassurance.
