Susanne Johnson Receives 2024 Volunteer President's Award

May 13, 2024

In the realm of hospice care, where empathy and kindness reign supreme, individuals like volunteer Susanne Johnson shine brightly. Her unwavering commitment to Bluegrass Care Navigators (BCN) has not only transformed the lives of countless patients and their families but has also earned her the prestigious 2024 Volunteer President's Award.

Johnson's journey with BCN began in May 2023. After she experienced the support and the deep value hospice provided to her parents, Johnson felt a calling to give back. Immediately immersing herself in training, including specialized 11th Hour training, her dedication knew no bounds.

As a new volunteer, she adopted a nursing home, Bourbon Heights, where she pledged weekly visits to all hospice patients. Despite encountering a particularly grumpy patient known for pushing people away, Johnson remained steadfast. With patience and empathy, she gradually broke through his tough exterior, forging a bond over shared interests, particularly horses. Johnson's persistence and compassion provided him with a friend who refused to give up on him, especially during his declining health.

Johnson's outreach extended beyond Bourbon Heights, as she started providing respite care to a dementia patient so that the patient’s caregiver could take a break, grocery shop, or attend personal appointments. Although the diagnosis mirrored her mother’s, Johnson embraced the opportunity to offer solace and support. Her empathetic presence not only comforted the patient but also served as a lifeline for the caregiver, since Johnson could empathize from her own experiences.

Johnson continued to expand her volunteer efforts by becoming a trained 11th Hour volunteer. Her dedication ensures that no patient faces their final moments alone. By volunteering for shifts to sit with patients, she exemplifies the essence of compassion and companionship in the face of adversity.

When BCN began to revise their volunteer training program, Johnson actively participated in refining the onboarding process, offering invaluable insights as a relatively new volunteer. Her unwavering belief in the transformative power of volunteerism underscores her commitment to excellence and the enduring legacy of compassion she seeks to cultivate.

Join us in congratulating Susanne Johnson as the recipient of the 2024 Volunteer President’s Award. She stands as a beacon of hope and humanity, embodying the spirit of selflessness and empathy that defines BCN's mission. Her journey exemplifies the profound impact one individual can make through acts of kindness and unwavering dedication to serving others in their time of need.

Marla Sowers was never defined by titles though she held many. A pianist and Miss Morehead State University, a valedictorian, a beautiful singer, and an excellent writer, she carried the practical wisdom of her farming family into everything she did. As a public school elementary music teacher, Marla shaped hearts by inviting students to see kindness as strength. When a dementia diagnosis altered the rhythm of her days, her husband Richard cared for her at home and then with the help of an assisted living facility for as long as he could. After several years, the facility referred her to Bluegrass Care Navigators (BCN) for hospice services.

Hi. I'm Callie. Most days, my job is simple: walk into rooms with my human, Mary, wag my tail, and let people know they’re not alone. I’ve been doing this therapy dog work with her for a while now, and I take it very seriously, even if I’m small and fluffy.

Bluegrass Care Navigators provides care in person and via phone
By Lisa Lewis, Support Center RN February 17, 2026
As a Support Center RN, I’ve witnessed many moments of compassion, but few have touched me as deeply as the call I received from a patient’s wife in our Pikeville region. She shared how our nurse, Tiffany Little (RN), provided care with such warmth and dedication that her presence brought genuine comfort and support to their lives.
Tim and Helen Hoffstedder

Team BCN brought compassionate, personalized care to Tim and Helen Hoffstedder during a challenging chapter in their lives. After receiving a dementia diagnosis almost seven years ago, Helen’s family did their best to care for her at home. When she required additional support, they moved her to ColdSpring Transitional Care where she could receive high-quality care around the clock. In February 2024, she began retaining fluid and had difficulty breathing. The team at ColdSpring Care referred the family to Bluegrass Hospice Care and that extra support brought her husband Tim immense reassurance.
