Navigating Through the Journey of Grief with Bluegrass Grief Care

June 9, 2023

Life’s most difficult moments require the most compassionate care, and your generosity makes this possible for so many in our community. At Bluegrass Care Navigators, we are dedicated to ensuring that no one faces the end of life alone, including the accompanying feelings of grief impacting all involved.

Losing a loved one — even an expected loss — is often overwhelming. So, when someone needs additional support, Bluegrass Grief Care can provide a continuation of our expert, compassionate care by helping individuals navigate their journey with grief as they learn to cope with their loss.

But did you know that Bluegrass Grief Care is not limited to hospice patient families? With the support of donors like you, our Grief Care services are available to anyone in the community who has experienced the loss of a loved one. Like Milo, who was only 13 years old when he lost his father to a sudden heart attack in 2017. For Milo and his mother, Yanya, our Grief Care services gave them a sense of belonging as they dealt with their grief in a compassionate and supportive setting.

“People wanted to help, but they didn’t really know what to say or do. I felt like an outcast from my peers,” Milo recalls.

That changed when Milo attended the Bluegrass Care Navigators Camp Hope, a free bereavement camp for children in our service area who have lost a loved one. Camp Hope offers a safe environment for kids and teens to express their grief, learn how to cope with difficult feelings and to support one another.

“At Camp Hope, I felt like I had a home, a refuge,” Milo remembers. “I’m still in contact with some friends that I made there.”

Milo’s mother, Yanya, says she felt the same sense of belonging, after joining a support group for adults.

“Our loss was so sudden. I felt lost and hopeless. The group is like a big, wonderful family. It’s a place you feel welcome no matter how you lost your loved one,” Yanya says. “And Milo and I would share our experiences with each other, which helped us deal with the grief together.”

Since his time at Camp Hope, Milo found a way to give back to Bluegrass Care Navigators by donating gifts for other kids who are grieving the loss of their loved one. Now, a freshman at Stanford University, Milo continues his mission to instill hope and confidence to children in need through his charity efforts and support for Bluegrass Care Navigators.

“Despite the demands of college, I am committed to this cause and believe that everyone can make a difference in their own way,” Milo says.

Your support today is much more than an act of charity. Like Milo, you are offering comfort for our patients, their loved ones, and many more in our community who are benefitting from the support and care they need to find peace and heal.

Thank you for helping us continue to make a difference in each of their lives.

Marla Sowers was never defined by titles though she held many. A pianist and Miss Morehead State University, a valedictorian, a beautiful singer, and an excellent writer, she carried the practical wisdom of her farming family into everything she did. As a public school elementary music teacher, Marla shaped hearts by inviting students to see kindness as strength. When a dementia diagnosis altered the rhythm of her days, her husband Richard cared for her at home and then with the help of an assisted living facility for as long as he could. After several years, the facility referred her to Bluegrass Care Navigators (BCN) for hospice services.

Hi. I'm Callie. Most days, my job is simple: walk into rooms with my human, Mary, wag my tail, and let people know they’re not alone. I’ve been doing this therapy dog work with her for a while now, and I take it very seriously, even if I’m small and fluffy.

Bluegrass Care Navigators provides care in person and via phone
By Lisa Lewis, Support Center RN February 17, 2026
As a Support Center RN, I’ve witnessed many moments of compassion, but few have touched me as deeply as the call I received from a patient’s wife in our Pikeville region. She shared how our nurse, Tiffany Little (RN), provided care with such warmth and dedication that her presence brought genuine comfort and support to their lives.
