Working at BCN is the Best. Decision. Ever.

June 9, 2023

Autumn Wilson says that working for Bluegrass Care Navigators (BCN) is the best decision she ever made. Not only does she appreciate the patient-centered care that BCN provides, but she also appreciates the family-first atmosphere that BCN promotes. After coming to work for BCN almost a year ago, she has been able to spend more time with her family and now feels that she can be truly present when she is with them.

“Our care is very patient-oriented, which is what I believe all healthcare should be like, instead of worrying about length of stay and the dollar,” she said. “At BCN we’re actually taking care of the patient and family in a holistic way with our team of social workers, chaplains, nurses and CNAs.”

Prior to her time here, Autumn worked on an oncology floor at a hospital and sent a number of patients home with Bluegrass Hospice Care services. Several of her co-workers transitioned to BCN and encouraged her to follow.

“I thought it was too good to be true, but I absolutely love it here,” she said. “If my son has an event during the day, I can arrange my schedule with my boss to attend and still see my patients. This company is so family-oriented and actually cares that we have a family.”

Wilson saw two positions open at BCN before she applied. Since she had never done any type of nursing except bedside nursing, she didn’t want to make a transition she regretted. She prayed for the Lord to lead and guide her before applying and knew it was the right next step when she was offered the job.

“It was just meant to be, and I have loved every day of working for BCN,” she said. “It really was meant to be for me to be here, and I have never wished I hadn’t come.”

As a full-time flex nurse, Wilson describes her role as a “substitute teacher” for nurses from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For example, if a nurse has a large caseload, Wilson will see four patients per day to help lighten that nurse’s load. Whether at a patient’s home for one hour or four hours, she and the rest of the nursing care team make each of their patients feel like the only one.

“I just love brightening my patients’ days until their last day,” Wilson said. “I get to comfort the families with our knowledge and let them know what to expect. We are a calm in the storm, and I love that.”

Wilson wanted to be a nurse since childhood when she suffered from severe asthma and was in and out of the hospital. She saw the difference a good nurse can make, and she determined to become a good nurse. After her papaw gave her a nurse’s cap to play with, she couldn’t see herself doing anything else. She earned her CNA license in high school and worked as a CNA while earning her RN degree at Big Sandy Community and Technical College in Prestonsburg.
