Pikeville CNA Provides Care to Patients No Matter the Weather

May 12, 2025

Patty May’s dedication to her patients has never wavered even in this past winter’s snow, ice and cold. For three weeks in January, Patty, a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in our Pikeville region, repeatedly walked two miles each day to reach her car that she parked at the mouth of her holler so she wouldn’t get snowed in and could continue to provide necessary care to her patients.

“My patients are my friends, and I think of them like my family,” she said. “To me when I decided to be a CNA, that was me taking responsibility for the people I’m going to take care of. You don’t leave your family when they need help. You go until the end and do whatever it takes to make sure they’re cared for.”

Patty decided to become a CNA after witnessing the kindness and compassion the clinicians showed her mother during a hospital stay almost 20 years ago. After her mother passed, Patty knew she wanted to give to others in the same way, and that calling led her to become a CNA. Since then, she has worked in a variety of roles for several nursing homes and clinics before finding her home at Bluegrass Care Navigators.

“The best part is that I have a little bit more time that I can spend with my patients,” she said. “I see eight to ten patients per day to provide help with baths, dressing and other daily living activities, but I feel like I’m getting paid to visit and help people. That’s what I want to do.”

Patty’s story epitomizes the heart, dedication and values of all our Bluegrass Care Navigators’ team members. Her unwavering commitment, fueled by a lifetime of love and service, helps our patients feel supported and know that they matter.
